"Ich bin ein Berliner"

In June 1963, in a speech to the people of West Berlin, John F. Kennedy said "Ich bin ein Berliner". It was his way of expressing solidarity with those people's position as West Germans living in an exclave within East Germany. It has been said that Kennedy was declaring himself to be a jam doughnut.

Wikipedia however asserts that this was not how the statement was interpreted at the time, but the misconception arose over the succeeding years – not least when it was promulgated by Len Deighton in Berlin Game (1983).
